Gabe Gomes

Gabe Gomes

Gabe works at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the physical sciences, building systems that can autonomously reason about, design, and execute real-world experiments.

He is currently a Research Scientist at X, The Moonshot Factory (fka Google X). He is on leave from Carnegie Mellon University, where he is an Assistant Professor in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Machine Learning, and where he leads the Gomes Group.

At CMU, his group has been pioneering the integration of foundation models into chemical sciences and engineering, developing intelligent agents that can autonomously plan and run sophisticated experiments on automated and cloud labs. Their work spans autonomous science, AI-driven molecular design, catalysis, robotics, and biomaterials, with the goal of building conversational interfaces that democratize access to advanced scientific tools. Recent work has been published in Nature, Nature Machine Intelligence, Nature Computational Science, and JACS, among others.

He earned his Ph.D. in 2018 from Florida State University under the guidance of Professor Igor V. Alabugin, and completed postdoctoral research in the Matter Lab at the University of Toronto with Professor Alán Aspuru-Guzik, where he was awarded the prestigious NSERC Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Gabe also serves as an ad hoc AI for Science advisor to government agencies and international organizations, and is the cofounder of e^vals, a consultancy for scientific evaluations of foundation models.
